Museo Stefano Bardini

The Museo Stefano Bardini is a unique museum in Florence, Italy that houses a vast collection. The museum's namesake originates from Florentine art dealer Stefano Bardini, who originally constructed the building in 1880. This redesign project aims to give the museum's identity a clear direction while maintaining the unique origins and highlights Bardini's legacy.

Research
Constraints
The museum utilized the iconic Bardini blue for its logo, wayfinding, and physical merchandise. Besides the use of the blue, the museum struggled to identity itself as an eclectic collection rather than a historical museum.
Display
Bardini's display method prioritized aesthetic harmony and symmetry over historical accuracy.

Bardini had an affinity for frames as he thought of them as an art form. In the museum, there is a room dedicated to showing off his elaborate and varied frame collection. He also cut frames to fit artworks.

In addition, Bardini has his collection in print. The design drew inspiration from the typography from his book collection to reflect the historical context of the period.
Identity
Final direction
The final design centers around a variable logo system that could be applied to a multitude of designs. In application, I focused on making the parts of the logo expand out to accommodate the full size of a design, creating a frame and following the cutting of the frames.
Multiple logos
Therefore, I created a varied logo system that could fit any dimension. The word "Bardini" can be broken up in a variety of ways. This breaking of the logo reflects Stefano Bardini's act of slicing frames to fit a piece of artwork.

Insights
Final direction
To me, the rebranding process lead to a focus centered around audience perspective. I learned to push beyond the visual applying a design choice consistently throughout a system. Florence is a city where you can't step away from history; I learned to embrace that in this project, letting the past inform my choices.
